Archbishop of Canterbury photosHere are some photos from a recent visit to Lambeth palace to photograph the Archbishop for his press secretary. A humble man. He didn't say much and certainly wasn't interested in small talk - why would he be: he can talk to God I suppose - but he didn't give off the air of dominance or project his authority despite being fairly tall and wearing an impressive -what are they called, robes? I was given little time, was very nervous and was told Vatican TV was waiting outside the room for an interview ( I imagined they were standing in uniform carrying leather whips and were ready to beat me) and yet he was very calm and kind. I had some great shots lined up but couldn't use most of htem because as soon as he walked in the room the sun blasted throught he windows ( a coincidence I hope, otherwise I might have to start believing) and the subtle light was lost. We had to quickly rearrange and shoot from a different angle. Some of the shots are taken in the crypt, a cavenous cool space down below the palace where I asked him to stand in silence and reflect. Hence the seriousness.
